Welcomefrom the Headteacher
We are delighted to welcome you to The Gilberd School.
Founded in 1912 and celebrating 110 years in 2022, we are proud of our rich heritage. Beginning life as a selective boys’ technical school and later, a co-educational grammar school, we are now a highly performing and forward-looking, non-selective, co-educational academy. Our simple motto perfectly encapsulates the formula for our continuing success:

Samuel Starling
Head Boy
Here at The Gilberd School, student leadership is not about wearing a badge. It is about representing our 1,600 students and embodying the values we aspire to for all Gilberdians. I began my leadership journey as a Junior Prefect in Year 8, and in Year 10, I was appointed Deputy Sports Captain and Deputy House Captain. Most recently, having been selected to the position of Head Boy, my responsibilities include working closely with the Senior X and the Head Girl, leading assemblies, and managing projects. It is a privilege to be serving in this role as it represents both an incredible honour and a profound learning experience.

Head Girl
In all social structures, hierarchies shape us, and The Gilberd is no exception. My leadership journey began as a Junior Prefect in Year 7, the foundational role which introduced me to a formal level of responsibility. I have since progressed to House Captain and now proudly serve as Head Girl. This role has been one of my greatest achievements, offering opportunities to grow both as a leader and as a public speaker. Some of my duties include meeting on a weekly basis with our Headteacher and working alongside the Head Boy and Senior XXXIII to complete projects. I also particularly enjoy mentoring our cohort of younger students, and representing the school at events such as Open and Induction Evening, delivering speeches and helping parents.

Head Cadet
I have been a member of The Gilberd School Combined Cadet Force for nearly three years. During this time, I have developed valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, and discipline which have helped me grow both personally and professionally. As Head Cadet and a Lance Corporal, I take pride in leading by example, supporting younger cadets, and helping to deliver parts of the CCF training programme. Alongside my CCF involvement, I have also held several other leadership roles within school, further strengthening my ability to guide and motivate others.

Head Cadet
After three unforgettable and eye-opening years with the Combined Cadet Force at The Gilberd School, I’ve grown and adapted in ways I never imagined possible. From public speaking to team building and leadership, the CCF has equipped me with a wide range of practical skills that I’ve put to the test during our weeklong camps at military bases. Over the past three years, I have earned the rank of Sergeant, and now have the privilege of leading and teaching younger cadets the very skills passed down to me by previous members of the CCF. It’s been a journey of challenge, growth, and pride—and one I’ll carry with me for years to come.
