Success for top apprentices at annual awards

Apprentices Get into Top Gear at Babcock’s Automotive Apprenticeship Challenge

Dozens of automotive apprentices have been put through their paces, showing off their highly honed technical skills, at the fourth Babcock Automotive Apprentice of the Year competition in Milton Keynes.

BMW apprentice Toby Diggins from Birmingham was crowned overall Automotive Apprentice of the Year at the event at Babcock’s dedicated Automotive Training Academy competing against other apprentices from brands such as Volkswagen Group, Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobile Group (FCA), Mazda, Royal Mail Fleet and Babcock Critical Services. The 22-year-old will finish his Level 3 apprenticeship in December after two and a half years at the academy.

As one of the UK’s leading training providers, Babcock works in close partnership with companies to ensure apprentices are trained to the highest level. After being crowned 2017 apprentice, Toby said:

“The quality of the training we’ve all had at the academy has been amazing and the competition has been a fantastic opportunity for all of us to show off just how much we’ve learned at the academy before we go out into the wider world.”

Babcock trains over 1,000 automotive apprentices but those taking part in the competition enter after being nominated based on ongoing performance. During the course of the day, apprentices were challenged with a range of practical tasks according to their chosen specialist area.

The winners are pictured L-R above (flanked on the far left by Rebecca Chaplin of Car Dealer magazine and on the far right by Gordon Reynolds of Babcock):

Panel Technician of the Year: Joshua Meredeith

Service Technician of the Year: Jack Dunseith

Parts Consultant/Advisor of the Year: Araon Thomas

Customer Service Consultant/Advisor of the Year: Emily Holman

Overall apprentice of the Year and Paint Technician of the Year: Toby Diggins

Babcock Technical Trainers and Vocational Learning Advisors were responsible for judging apprentices on the day with winners of each of the above categories going into the final round before the overall winner was announced.

All the winners were presented with a certificate and a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. The Overall winner, Toby, also received a bottle of champagne, a year’s free membership to the Institute of Motor Industry and an inscription on the Babcock Automotive Apprentice of the Year plaque.

Gordon Reynolds, Director of Automotive Training at Babcock, said:

“This event has really gone from strength to strength and we’re delighted that more apprentices are taking part each year. It’s been a chance for them to show off what they’ve learned and hopefully enjoy themselves too.

“The Technical Training Academy isn’t just a place where apprentices train to get qualified, we’ve created an environment where they can develop and thrive as individuals; learn to collaborate with our other customer brands and experience the real life skills they’ll need when they move on from training.”

Easton & Otley College

Taster Days

We are aware that many schools have enrichment activities and activity days in July. Would you like to bring a group of students to Otley for an activity day during July just before you break up, so you can try out various practical activities from tree surgery to tractors, mice to sheep, equine or orienteering, etc. We can take up to 200 at any one time. I attach an example plan, one we have used this year already. I realise this is close to July, and many of your activity days are already planned, but if you would like to bring a minibus or coach load please email me back and we can discuss days and activities. (I apologise if you are already booked onto a taster day in July).

Apprenticeship Information

I have also attached some new information about our Apprenticeships which may be of interest to you.

Hope you’re having a good week,

Many Thanks
