On Thursday 9th July The Gilberd School hosted the year 7 awards evening. It was an excellent evening and it was a pleasure to see so many students receiving awards. It was also fantastic to share the celebrations with parents and guardians. I would like to thank Mr Oliver for taking the time out to speak to the students and parents. I hope that next year’s event will be even bigger!

The boys had the opportunity to meet and train with Graham Napier (ex Gilberd student) who plays professional cricket for Essex and England. The team then watched Essex Vs Glamorgan.

Well done to all the students and staff that helped participate in sports day this year. We couldn’t have wished for any better weather for students to participate in events such as javelin throwing, the high jump, track races and many other events. To see all the action click here for the gallery.
On Wednesday 1st July 27 students and 2 teachers from the Realschule St Matthias, Bitburg, Germany arrived for the first leg of this year’s German Exchange. The students were to stay with their penfriends – all students from Years 8 and 9 – for a week.
The week consisted of a wide variety of activities and trips. On 2nd July there was a welcome assembly at school before the group left for a day out in Colchester. We visited the zoo, the castle and then the shops! On 3rd July we had a day out in Thorpe Park. The weekend was then spent in the host families. On 6th July the German party went to London for the day and visited the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, Covent Garden and had a walking tour of the main sights. The English party then joined them in the evening and we went to the musical We Will Rock You. Tuesday 7th July was spent on the coast and we went to Walton, Clacton and Frinton. For many of the German students this was the first time they had been to the seaside!
The German party then left to return to Bitburg at 8.45 am on 8th July. We had had a wonderful week and are really looking forward to the return visit to Bitburg in September. Many, many thanks to all our students and host families who worked so hard over the week to make the exchange such a success. Also many thanks to all the staff at the Gilberd who helped out with the visits and particularly to Mr Reader and Mrs Atkinson.

Lewis Foster, Lewis Ambury, Kaia Goodenough, and Sarah Beard, represented the Gilberd School in the Colchester Schools Year 9 Maths Competition on Thursday 25th June. It was held at Sir Charles Lucas with ten other schools taking part from in and around Colchester. All together there were 14 rounds of different types of puzzles that had to be completed in less than 2 hours.
The Gilberd School managed to finish in 4th place, only being beaten by Colchester Royal Grammer School, St Benedicts and Thomas Lord Audley. The team worked very well together, they were a huge credit to the school. Everybody had fun and we managed to beat schools such as Philip Morant and The Girls High!
Well done to all the students that took part lets beat them again next year!
Below are some example problems which the students had to solve:
Friday 19th June was a Non Uniform day and we managed to raise £ 973.58 ! This will go on to help the St. Helena Hospice and Cancer Research UK.
A big thank you to everyone that has been collecting the Tesco for Schools & Clubs vouchers for us. We’ve collected over 20,000 vouchers this year, which will help us pick valuable resources for the school.

The Year 7 football team have done something that neither Manchester United nor Chelsea can do. Keep a 100% record throughout the season. They rounded off their great run by beating Harwich School 6-1 in the North East Essex schools under 12’s final held at the Colchester United Weston Community Stadium

We had our annual Guitar Fest on Wednesday 29th April . It was held in the Performing Arts Centre . All students who received guitar tuition from school were invited to participate in this event which is an opportunity to show parents what they have done in their guitar lessons.
The event was sponsored by Mr Bob Cocozza from the USA and Hofner UK who have supplied us with a number of brand new guitars to award to worthy students who have shown commitment to their studies and sustained progress.
This is the 3rd year that we have run this event and we have given away 10 guitars so far from Classical guitars to Electro Acoustic and even a personally signed Brian May replica.
